Can I get a medical cannabis card in Virginia?

Effective July 1, 2022 patients will only need the medical certification from a certified medical provider to purchase medical cannabis products.

Refund Policy

Effective April 10, 2023, our refund policy will change. Full refunds have been provided in the past with appointment cancellations or denials of a medical certification. However, due to a policy change by the payment processor, they will no longer cover processing fees. RVA Telecare will not absorb this cost and full refunds will continue to be provided less this processing fee of 2.9% +.30.

Did Virginia legalize medical marijuana?

As of July 1, 2020, possession of authorized medical cannabis products by those registered to participate in the state's program is provided explicit statutory legal protection. As of July 1, 2021, medical cannabis in the form of botanical flower is also legal.

When did the law take effect?

The original affirmative defense law was passed in 2015 for intractable epilepsy and expanded in 2018 for any condition recommended by a practitioner. Beginning July 1, 2020, possession of authorized medical cannabis products by those certified to participate in the state's program, are provided explicit statutory legal protection.

How will patients get medical cannabis products?

Once patients are certified, they can go to one of the dispensaries approved by the Code of Virginia. In 2017, Virginia approved a regulatory program for the in-state production of medical cannabis by five providers initially, one per Health Service Area (HSA), who will grow, extract, dispense, and deliver medical cannabis. These licensed providers are called “pharmaceutical processors,” and are simply vertically integrated dispensaries. This means one provider will do everything from growth through dispensation on one site. The processor locations are in Richmond, Portsmouth, Manassas, and Bristol. Each of these facilities can provide medical cannabis products.

How do I contact the Board?

Effective January 1, 2024, the Virginia Cannabis Control Authority (CCA) has assumed oversight of the medical cannabis program.
